Approach to Tutoring:

Through sharing his knowledge of content as well as efficient ways of understanding and applying this information in assessment situations, James is dedicated to helping his students fulfil their academic aspirations. Recognising that every student has a unique learning style, James endeavours to create an engaging and personalised learning environment in the hope of enriching their academic experience.

James’ past experience tutoring has taught him the importance of consistent preparatory work. He realises the importance of initially working with the individual to ascertain an understanding of what areas the student excels in and what areas they could improve and subsequently aspires to provide detailed feedback to help bring this progress to fruition.

Ultimately, James hopes to foster a passion for learning in his students in the bid to facilitate academic excellence.

Biography:

James grew up in Sydney, attending Lindfield East Public School from Kindergarten to year 6, before studying at Barker College from year 7 to year 12. It was during his time at Barker College that he developed a love for reading and writing, leading him to undertake extension units in History and English.

Seeking to further explore his passion for the Humanities, James has decided to study Arts at the University of Sydney, where he is currently majoring in English and Economics. Having immensely enjoyed his brief study of French and Mandarin during school, James hopes to have the opportunity of taking a semester abroad where he can uncover the basics of another language.

In addition to tutoring, James enjoys spending time catching up with his old friends from primary and high school and his new friends from university. He is very passionate about tennis and football, and though his attempts at piano and saxophone were mediocre at best, he nevertheless maintains a love for music. James is an avid reader who is currently reading Outside the Gates of Eden and Anna Karenina. James also loves travelling, and in particular, he is always looking forward to the times he gets to visit his family in Malaysia.

Testimonials:

James has been a friendly, dedicated and supportive tutor who has provided a wealth of knowledge. His explanations are always clear and easy to understand, which is especially helpful for complex and challenging topics in Economics. James also provides effective and relevant feedback and is always willing to look over my practice essays and exam responses, whether it be during the lesson or outside of tutoring hours. I would highly recommend James as a tutor to any student.

YEAR 12 STUDENT, KAMBALA

James has tutored me since the very beginning of my Year 12 English studies. In my early Year 12 English Journey, I had always felt comfortable within the boundaries of 3 unit English, never believing I had the ability to take it further to 4 unit, which was only advertised for the very best of the best English students. However, I wanted to challenge myself so I took it up, choosing the Short Story structure as my Major Work with a word limit of 6000 words. Within the first brainstorming and writing of my story in the 2 month Christmas holidays, I found it extremely difficult, contemplating whether I should even drop the course entirely. If it was not for James, I probably would have quit right then and there. James was unfathomable in his positivity, his guidance, his encouragement and his dedication to my own work. Even at times where I didn't even believe in myself, James was amazing in his understanding and support of my work! Whether it be late nights refining drafts of my story or culling entire scenes entirely to make room for better ones, James went above and beyond for me, offering advice on research, structuring and writing that saw me actually love story writing for the first time in my life. James is an amazing person to talk to in-between drafts, funny and undoubtedly very clever in his knowledge of literature. If you are someone who is looking for an English tutor who you can chat to about your problems within English or need someone to offer that helping hand to your own unique writing, James is the tutor for you!

YEAR 12 STUDENT, THE SCOTS COLLEGE

James has only been tutoring my son for 1 term and already we have seen an amazing turn around in his English results.  For a boy who has never been a keen English student James has been the perfect tutor, managing to combine a sense of humour with encouragement, motivation and a wealth of knowledge.  I hope that James can continue working with my son all the way through to the HSC.

MOTHER OF YEAR 8 STUDENT, SHORE SCHOOL

James has taught me for 2 years. He is an excellent tutor who has proven to be caring, patient, and highly experienced. His expertise in English has significantly improved my understanding of texts and essay structures. I am very fortunate to have had James as my English tutor. I am confident to say that my tutoring experience with him will have a significant impact on my education beyond the HSCs.
