Tutoring Services

Our Primary (K-6) students study the following core subjects with us at Premier Tutors either through group or private one-on-one tutoring:

  • Mathematics (K-6)
  • English (K-6)
  • Thinking Skills (Years 3-5)
  • Debating and Public Speaking (Year 3-6)

Other major subjects (inc. History, Science, Modern Languages, Classics (Latin and Classical Greek)) are also available via Private Tutoring and Homeschooling.

Our primary program has successfully assisted students over the last twelve years to:

  1. Achieve superior academic results through deep understanding and problem solving.
  2. Gain scholarships and admissions to the world's top private and selective schools.

We have been able to achieve this through:

1. Our Publishing House

We place an unprecedented investment in preparation (currently 10 hours of resource development per 1 hour of teaching) to provide our students with both:

  1. Deep Understanding – A carefully designed teaching approach from first principles that generates deep understanding instead of superficial, rote learning; and
  2. Problem Solving – Through developproblem solving skills tested by the admissions exams, instead of rote learning basic ‘textbook style’ drills and poorly covering higher-level content.

Deep Understanding

Students can achieve a deep understanding of a concept when they are taught in a clear and logical way. However, this requires substantial preparation from the teacher.

Consider how fractions are taught at school in year 4. Teachers usually use purely arithmetic and front-loading students with a lot of new terminology. Students often find this approach non-intuitive and unsatisfying. Instead, consider the ease and depth of learning that can occur when a visual method is employed to make understanding fractions intuitive. Simply:

  1. Students first visually appreciate $\frac{1}{6}$ in a grid to appreciate a fraction intuitively:

  1. Arithmetic operations are represented visually as well; when the fraction $\frac{1}{6}$ is observed as a visual quantity in a box, it is easy to understand why $\frac{1}{6} \times 2 = \frac{2}{6}$, as you are just multiplying the single box by $2$

  1. We then effortlessly teach students simplification; why $\frac{2}{6}=\frac{1}{3}$

The above approach was developed over many weeks of carefully thinking about how to teach fractions within our Publishing House. In devoting this much time to preparation for our students:

  • Our students can understand fractions in seconds; not weeks.
  • We strip away all unnecessary elements, reducing fractions to just a very simple application of arithmetic (a Kindergarten level concept). Indeed, as fractions now require nothing more than kindergarten arithmetic to understand, we can now teach them in Kindergarten. This is one of the reasons that Premier Tutors students of all abilities are so far ahead of their contemporaries.

Likewise, for English, we teach in an integrated, cultured way that students find interesting. For example, when teaching figurative language (e.g. similes and metaphors) we first expose students to its practical relevance in advertising, rather than taking the approach that schools do of attempting to force an understanding through literature. When we teach literature, we do so in the context of history, culture, and arts, developing matured students who stand a level above their contemporaries. By first generating genuine interest within our students, we can then elevate their appreciation for the language and literature.

This approach of dramatic simplification, as well as visual and practical teaching is how we teach every single topic at Premier Tutors. It is a result of thousands on thousands of hours, twelve years no less, of condensing complicated learning systems. It comes from being hyper-selective in only working with the worlds best educators.

Problem Solving

The second function of our Publishing House is to produce the challenging problem solving questions that are the:

  1. Basis for private and selective school admissions exams; and
  2. Differentiators in school exams to move students up classes

These questions are difficult and expensive to write (they require highly experienced and distinguished specialists to produce; Premier Tutors currently spends 10 hours of resource development per 1 hour of teaching).

These questions are completely missed at school and by other tutoring providers. Instead, as a proxy for enrichment, students are forced to quickly and poorly cover higher curriculums at a surface-level understanding. It is easier for schools and others superficially accelerate students, as they can use existing school textbooks, rather than creating targeted resources on problem solving to first develop depth in understanding within the student's age group.

Poorly covering higher curriculum content is a poor strategy for students who wish to be high achievers. This is because there is no alignment with this content and the challenging problem solving questions that actually get tested:

Since top schools structure their admissions exams around difficult problem solving, the last thing you want to do is to to prepare for these exams with a superficial understanding of higher curriculum content, as these do not cross over.

The only thing you should be doing is indeed focusing on developing the difficult problem solving skills that deliver the superior academic results needed for competitive admission.

Building this depth in understanding is precisely what we focus on at every age group for our students at Premier Tutors:
