Oliver strongly believes in ensuring students understand and engage with fundamental concepts while also teaching them how to best answer assessment questions. In this way, he fosters their ability to think laterally and access the harder marks in assessments, while also training them to maximise their result across the whole paper.
Oliver is always prepared for lessons and personalises them for each student. He aims to push students past what they believe to be their own academic limits by setting tangible goals and providing regular feedback on practice questions. In particular, Oliver begins by working with the student to identify strengths and weaknesses and focuses on building confidence and skill in weaker areas, while also maintaining skills in stronger areas. Oliver has found that this approach ensures that tutoring is beneficial for the student.
Furthermore, Oliver is dedicated to sharing his knowledge about how to study and manage time effectively, so that students can maximise their academic performance while also maintaining their passions in other disciplines.
Oliver grew up on Sydney’s north shore, attending Sydney Grammar School, at St Ives, then College Street, from Kindergarten through to Year 12. After being awarded one of 25 prestigious Tuckwell Scholarships, Oliver turned down an offer to study Medicine at UNSW, instead deciding to study a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) – Science at the Australian National University. He intends to pursue medicine as a post-graduate program.
With a wide variety of interests, both academic and not, Oliver decided to pursue his main passion at university – science. He combined his scientific curiosity and interest in helping others at the ANU, where he studies a research-intensive science degree, focussing on biochemistry and its medical applications. Oliver attributes his deep interest in science to the wonderful teachers he was fortunate enough to have in his time at school.
When not tutoring, Oliver is heavily involved in college and university life at the ANU. He competes in Intervarsity University debating competitions and also sings as part of the university choir, which he particularly enjoys, having previously sung with the Sydney Philharmonic choir. He enjoys a variety of social sports, which he plays for his college. Oliver also enjoys running in long-distance races and competes regularly in half-marathons.
