Liam believes that the backbone of successful tutoring is engagement between the student and the tutor. As such, he prides himself on ensuring his lessons captivate his students, creating a personalised approach in order to adapt his lessons to the specific needs of each student.
Liam cannot overstate the importance of practising. Questions are so much easier if you have seen them before (or something similar). He thus blends lessons on theory with supervised practice in his lessons, adjusting the pace based on how each student responds.
Liam believes each of his students has the potential to do exceedingly well and that it is his duty to foster that potential as well as possible.
Liam grew up in Dili, Timor-Leste, living there for ten years while his parents worked in development. In 2015, his family moved to Sydney seeking more opportunities for his education and he went to Sydney Grammar School. Graduating in the Class of 2020, he achieved a 99.90 ATAR on the strength of his STEM subjects.
With a non-conventional primary school education at Dili International School, Liam was deeply engaged in learning from a young age. Despite being very strong in theoretical mathematics, Liam wishes for his work to have practical benefits, inspired by activities such as the Open Source Malaria project.
In addition to tutoring, Liam practises Taekwondo, goes to the beach, and volunteers in fundraisers. He loves seeing his friends, whether it's for social rock climbing, a friendly Geoguessr competition, critiquing a movie, or simply hanging out, as well as reading whatever he can get his hands on—but especially fantasy.
In 2021, Liam was one of only two applicants who were accepted into MIT from Australia. He is currently studying Engineering and Mathematics at MIT.
