IB Advisory
Choosing between the IB and the HSC or VCE can be challenging. Every course has its own merits and is suited to a particular profile of student. As such, it is important to be fully informed when making this decision, as your choice of education pathway can have a profound impact on your ability to gain acceptance into competitive university courses.
At Premier Tutors, we aim to assist students in making important course decisions in preparation for years 11 and 12. We offer a consultation service for families that is run by one of our specialist IB advisors, who can provide insight into the demands and nuances of the program. By considering the learning style, skills, interests and study methods of the student, we are able to advise which program we believe is most suitable.
For your convenience, our advisors can travel to your home for the consultation, or alternatively, you can visit our office in St Leonards. This service can also be delivered online, if you reside outside Sydney.
In the consultation, our advisor will present an overview of the IB diploma program, outline the attributes which are generally linked to academic success in the IB and discuss the student’s interests, strengths and weaknesses. From this information, the advisor can then assess the student’s suitability to the program.
If the student subsequently decides to pursue the IB diploma, our advisors can assist with subject selection. They will work with the family to design a course program that plays to the student’s strengths, while also balances both light and heavy content subjects. Further, the student can speak to our IB tutoring team, whose experience covers an extensive range of subjects, so they can get a better understanding of what is involved for each subject they are considering.
In terms of deciding higher level (HL) and standard level (SL) subjects, our advisor will ensure that the student’s subject choices at the beginning of Year 11 leave their options open. When these decisions must be firmly cemented with the student’s school (generally at the start of Year 12), the advisor can once again step in to assist the student in finalising their choices.
To offer a balanced view of both the HSC (or VCE) and IB, the student can also request the opportunity to talk to an HSC specialist, who can provide a different perspective and address any questions the student may have about the HSC program. If the student decides to choose the HSC pathway, this advisor can then provide further assistance in terms of subject selection. To learn more about our HSC advisory services, please click below.
